Where donkeys can do TF they want and get out with it

Europe, often dubbed ‘the old continent’, truly lives up to its name in the best possible way.
It’s a place where traditions, ranging from the religious to the downright quirky (my personal favorite so far is Fallas – if you’re curious about it, check out the article here), are held in high regard.
The well preserved architecture and monuments, boasting castles straight out of a movie and majestic churches, adds to the charm.

But what makes these festivities truly special is how they preserve not only the solemn ones, but also the ones born out of satire.
Take, for instance, the hilarious and slightly maddening ‘Palio d’Assini’—a donkey race where the donkeys call the shots. Spectators cheer them on, whether they’re racing in the right direction, doing a complete 180, or just standing still in all their stubbornness.
It’s a sight to behold, with Alba’s (Italy) streets adorned with flags representing the different competing neighborhoods and parades kicking off the celebration in style.

There’s even a royal flair as nobles proudly present the racers and donkeys from each neighborhood.
Then, the excitement reaches a crescendo as the race kicks off, divided into three thrilling rounds. While some donkeys charge ahead with unexpected speed, others display their stubbornness, stopping just short of the finish line despite their riders’ best efforts.

Witnessing a donkey lose because it simply refused to cross the line never fails to bring up a mix of laughter and frustration from the crowd.
Yet, even after the race concludes, the excitement and happy atmosphere of the city remains palpable.

Streets come alive with a colorful parade featuring participants from different neighborhoods, dressed up in a delightful array of disguises and costumes. It’s a celebration that leaves an indelible mark, filled with laughter, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments.
I hope to find and be part of more celebrations and festivities like these. The ones in my sights are ‘La Tomatina’ in Spain, where people throw tomatoes at each other, and the Ivrea Carnival in Italy, where for three ferocious days people throw oranges at one another (both involve some kind of violence xD).
I hope you can join me (read me) on my next adventure or that I see you at these events someday 🙂
Good voyages and see you around!
